Surviving The Flu!

It's flu season and you are surrounded by those you come in contact with who are coughing and sneezing. Try as you might to be cautious and avoid this annoying illness, you feel the symptoms coming on. First it is a cough, then a runny nose, and then extreme exhaustion plagues you. Your body begins to ache and chill, and the thermometer reads about 100 degrees. your head begins to ache, the throat is sore, chest discomfort sets in, and then the nausea and vomiting begin. These are all symptoms of the seasonal flu, a contagious respiratory illness caused by an influenza virus that attacks up to 20% of us each year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity can last from one to two weeks. The flu can result in complications like pneumonia and dehydration which can land many people in the hospital. More than half of flu-related hospitalizations and about 90 percent of flu-related deaths occur in people 65 and older.

It is critically important to take protective steps and know important strategies to help you cope. Here are steps to help speed your recovery:

  • Call your doctor and discuss medications. Both over-the-counter as well as prescription.

  • Keep tabs on your Temperature. A fever spike warrants medical attention.

  • Hydrate! Drink 8-10 glasses of water or other clear fluids per day to avoid dehydration.

  • Isolate. Stay in a separate area to prevent the virus from spreading, especially to anyone in the home that might be at high risk of developing complications from the flu. Keep the isolated area thoroughly disinfected.

  • Avoid spreading the virus. Other household members should wear masks, as well as wash their hands frequently with anti-bacterial soap and water especially after any contact with the sick person or their items.

  • Air circulation. Keep windows open in bathrooms and kitchens and other areas since good ventilation can significantly reduce the concentration for the virus in the air.

  • Get your Z's. Try to sleep as much as seven to nine hours every day in order to boost the body's immune system.

  • If symptoms worsen after 3-4 days, seek medical attention!
